SEO cost: what you pay with an agency, a freelancer or on your own
SEO cost depends on who does the work. Showing up in Google's organic results is free; what you pay for is time, yours or a provider's. Here's each option with figures from dated sources, and clear gaps where no reliable source exists. No average made up, no range without its page and date.
This page is part of the guide: SEO for small business
| Yourself | Freelancer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay | your time, maybe a tool | a provider's time | a team's time |
| Who you talk to | nobody | one person | an account manager |
| When you stop | your pages stay | your pages stay | your pages stay |
Before you sign a quote, you want to know what SEO costs and what you’re actually buying. The price depends mostly on who does the work. This page is part of our guide to SEO for small business.

SEO prices: what you’re actually paying for

First, Google sells nothing here. It writes that it costs nothing to appear in its organic results, and that it “doesn’t accept payment to crawl a site more frequently, or rank it higher” (Google Search Central, pages read 30 October 2026). So an SEO price is the price of work: research, fixes, writing, outreach, reporting.
Doing it yourself, a freelancer or an agency
- Yourself: you pay in time, and perhaps for a tool.
- A freelancer: one person, usually one specialty.
- An agency: several skills under one roof, and a higher fixed cost.
How much does SEO cost with an agency or a freelancer?
I only cite figures from pages I read and dated. The survey below is the most detailed source I found.
Ahrefs survey, 439 SEO providers (updated 15 August 2024, read 30 October 2026):
- Monthly retainer: the most common range was $501 to $1,000 a month (20.4% of respondents).
- By provider type: freelancers most often charged $251 to $500 a month, agencies $500 to $1,000, consultants $2,501 to $5,000.
- Hourly: the most common rate was $75 to $100 an hour (24%); consultants more often $100 to $150.
- Per project: the most common range was $2,501 to $5,000 (21.2%).
- United States and Canada only: 79.1% of providers charged at least $1,001 a month.
These are survey answers from 2024, not a quote for your business. Other pages in the top results (Forbes Advisor, WebFX, Shopify): missing data (planned source: those pages, read and dated).
SEO pricing models: monthly, by project, by the hour
- Monthly retainer: ongoing work, billed each month. Ask what’s included each month.
- By project: an audit, a site migration, a set of pages. A clear scope and an end date.
- By the hour: advice or training, often for people who do the work themselves.
SEO cost per month: what the ranges cover
A monthly fee pays for hours. Ask how many, and for what: fixes, new pages, link outreach, reports. A low monthly fee with no detail often means few hours.
Average cost of SEO: why averages mislead
An average mixes a one-page local site and a 5,000-product store. That’s why this page gives survey ranges with their source, not a single average. Your price depends on your site, your competition and your goals.
Local SEO: what changes in the price
Local work centers on your Business Profile, reviews and local pages. Google says there’s no way to pay for a better local ranking (Business Profile help, read 30 October 2026), so you pay for the work, not the spot. Ahrefs puts local SEO at $1,557 a month on average, an estimate it computes from the top of each price bracket (same survey). Treat it as an order of magnitude.
What makes the price go up or down
Competition in your industry and your area
A personal injury lawyer in a big city faces more competition than a bakery in a small town. More competition means more work for the same result.
The state of your site and the content you need
A site with errors, missing pages or slow pages needs fixing first. Many new pages to write cost more than a few to improve.
Showing up in AI answers: a new line on quotes
Some quotes now add “AI visibility”. Google’s position on its own AI features: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimisations necessary” (AI features and your website, read 30 October 2026). Ask what that line actually adds.
Cheap SEO: when a low price costs you more

Google’s warning: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings” (read 30 October 2026). It also advises giving providers read-only access to Search Console, and reminds you that you’re responsible for what contractors do on your site. Cheap offers that buy links can break Google’s spam policies.
Questions to ask before you sign a quote
Google’s page on hiring an SEO lists what a provider can offer: a review of your content and site structure, technical advice, content development, keyword research, training. Use it as a checklist, and ask:
- What exactly is included each month, and how many hours?
- What results do you expect, and in what time frame? Google suggests asking this very question.
- Will you buy links? If yes, walk away: paid links can break Google’s spam policies.
- What access do you need? Read-only access to Search Console is often enough.
- What happens when we stop? The pages and content should stay yours.
Be wary of unsolicited emails promising quick rankings: Google warns about them on the same page.
And Google Ads: how a click is priced
Ads aren’t SEO, but they often show up on the same quote. You don’t pay a flat fee: you pay per click, within a budget you set. Each ad goes through an auction where Google looks at your maximum bid and the quality of your ad; the actual cost per click is the final amount you’re charged, and it’s often lower than your maximum bid (Google Ads Help, read 30 October 2026). On a busy day, Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget, but over a month it won’t charge more than 30.4 times that daily budget (same source). A typical cost per click for your trade and city: missing data (planned source: Google Ads Keyword Planner).

An assistant like SemChat, from €0

Between doing everything yourself and outsourcing everything, there’s a tool that does the analysis for you. SemChat is an SEO assistant you talk to in plain language. Its prices, read on semchat.io/en/pricing on 30 October 2026, are in euros on the English page too:
- Free: €0, “Try semchat with no credit card”.
- Starter: €20 a month, or €16 a month billed yearly.
- Pro 5x: €100 a month; Pro 20x: €200 a month.
Every feature is in every plan; only the usage volume changes. Through this page’s link, a 10% lifetime discount applies if you subscribe within two weeks (email from Adrian Delmarre, SemChat, 29 October 2026). SemChat’s prices in US dollars: missing data (planned source: the pricing page read from the United States).
What I got on the Free plan, 29 October 2026: a full audit of my site in about 3 minutes, with a priority action plan. That one audit used up 100% of the Free plan’s monthly quota. Details on the SemChat pricing page.
SEO cost and results: the maths that matters
A price means nothing without what it brings back. The useful question: what is one customer from Google worth to you, and how many do you need to cover the spend?
SEO cost calculators: what they can and can’t tell you
Online calculators give an estimate from a few inputs. They can’t see your site, your competitors or your margins. Use one as a starting point for a conversation, not as a quote.

Frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost for a website?
It depends on who does it. In a survey of 439 SEO providers by Ahrefs (updated 15 August 2024), the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000. Doing it yourself costs mostly time, plus a tool if you want one. Google itself charges nothing for organic results.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
Missing data: the typical price of a one-time SEO audit by a provider (planned source: dated pricing pages of SEO providers). For comparison, SemChat's Free plan at €0 covered one full audit of my site on 29 October 2026, which used up its monthly quota.
Does SEO cost money if you do it yourself?
Not necessarily. Search Console and Business Profile are free, and PageSpeed Insights only needs your page's address. What it costs is your time. A paid tool becomes useful when you want competitor data or regular audits.
Is there a guaranteed result for the price?
No. Google writes: 'No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings' (Do you need an SEO?, read 30 October 2026).
