Link building outreach tools: the link plan SemChat built, checked
Link building outreach tools help you find sites that might link to you, find who to contact, and track your pitches. Before any of that, you need a plan: which page, which sites, which link text, at what pace. SemChat's link campaign skill wrote one for a real page on October 29, 2026. Here is what it got right, what it got wrong, and the checks to run yourself.
This page is part of the guide: link building tool

Earn links without buying them: one useful answer at a time. Illustration by Zéro Corvée.
Nobody links to your site yet, and you don’t have an agency budget. A link building tool can help, but a pile of software won’t tell you who to ask or what to say.
This page covers link building outreach tools in two parts. First, what each kind of tool does, from their pages and our dated fiches. Then the free link plan SemChat built for one page of my site, plugkit-avis.com, on October 29, 2026, with its three mistakes, each one checked. The SemChat buttons on this page are affiliate links.
Link building outreach: what a campaign involves, and which tools help

A link campaign is a dated push to get other sites to link to one page: this page, these sites, these three months. Outreach is the part where you contact those sites. Tools help at each step, but the plan comes first.
- 1 Your request The page, the time frame, no paid links.
- 2 Starting point The links you already have.
- 3 The plan Target sites, link text, pace.
- 4 Your check Sources, internal links, rankings.
- 5 Tracking A checkpoint every month.
Natural links: the ones you earn
A natural link is a site citing you because your page helps its readers. Nobody paid, nobody swapped. SemChat put it well in its plan, about answering on Reddit: “ta réponse doit rester utile même sans le lien” (your answer must stay useful even without the link). I haven’t checked how Reddit marks those links, so I won’t claim anything about them.
Link building software for outreach: what each kind does
Most lists sort link building software into layers. The LLMrefs list (read October 30, 2026) puts it this way: “Ahrefs and Semrush are strong research layers. BuzzStream, Pitchbox, and Respona are built for campaign execution. Hunter and Snov.io fill contact data gaps.” That’s their view. I haven’t tested any of these tools.
Link building tools that find prospects: Ahrefs, Semrush, Majestic
These tools tell you who links to whom, so you can spot sites that cite your competitors. From their pages and our fiches:
- Ahrefs: it offers a free version of its Backlink Checker, as “a glimpse into the power of our premium tool” (page read October 30, 2026).
- Semrush: its llms.txt describes its backlink tools as able to “audit backlink profiles, identify toxic links, discover outreach prospects” (fiche, October 29, 2026).
- Majestic: its home page invites you to “Develop your backlink strategies with our SEO Services, using Trust Flow and Citation Flow to build strong campaigns” (read October 30, 2026).
Tools that find emails and send pitches: Hunter, Pitchbox, Respona, BuzzStream
Once you have a list of sites, you need a contact and a message. The LLMrefs list files Hunter under contact data, and Pitchbox, Respona and BuzzStream under campaign execution. We have no dated fiche for them: no feature, price or quota is given here.
Content research to find who might link: BuzzSumo
The same list calls BuzzSumo a support tool, with Majestic and Moz Pro. We have no fiche for it, so I attribute nothing more to it.
Step 1: type SemChat’s template sentence (tested in French), no paid links
In SemChat’s chat, open Skills and pick Campagne de liens (link campaign). It suggests a template sentence: “Planifie une campagne de liens pour ma page” (Plan a link campaign for my page). I tested it in French, on a French site, in the French interface. How it phrases things in English is a data gap (planned for a later test).
Name the page, the time frame and your no-paid-links rule
Don’t type the template alone. Here is what I typed, translated: “Plan a link campaign for my page https://plugkit-avis.com/fr/messages-automatiques-instagram/ over three months. Start by listing the links already pointing to plugkit-avis.com: how many sites, which ones, with what link text. Then give, month by month, the type of sites to target, the text of each link and the pace. No bought links: only links I can get myself.”

The original ends with “Pas de lien acheté” (No bought links). Those few words keep the plan free.
Step 2: read your starting point: the links you already have
An accurate count: one link, one domain
SemChat’s first tool is a backlink profile. Its answer: 1 link, from 1 domain, with the link text “plugkit-avis.com.” That was right: DataForSEO Backlinks found the same on October 29, 2026.

It also admitted a limit: “le nom exact du domaine référent n’est pas renvoyé par mes données” (the exact name of the referring domain isn’t returned by my data). It saw the count and the link text, not the linking site.
A profile called clean that wasn’t: audit your backlinks first
Right after, it concluded: “Profil propre, aucune sur-optimisation à corriger” (Clean profile, no over-optimization to fix). The second half was right: the link text was neutral. The first half was false.
I looked up the source with DataForSEO Backlinks. The only link came from hub.rankvance.com, a link agency page with 2,341 outgoing links and a spam score of 20 on DataForSEO’s own scale. Before any campaign, open each page that already links to you. Our toxic backlink checker guide shows how. For the full check (referring domains, anchors, linked pages, risky links), run a link audit first. I watch that link and don’t disavow it: Google keeps disavowal for “a considerable number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links” plus a manual action (Search Console Help, read October 30, 2026).
Step 3: read the plan: target sites, anchors, pace
The plan sits in a “Campagne de liens” (Link campaign) document in the right panel, which you can export as a PDF. It lists 12 free links over 3 months.
The kind of sites to approach, month by month
From the document:
- Month 1, the base: a helpful answer on Reddit, two sites that already have an article on the topic, and a short article offered to a site in the niche.
- Month 2, the topic: two tool roundups, a guest article, a second Reddit answer.
- Month 3, consolidation: a contribution to a sector media site, “plus long à obtenir” (harder to get), an in-depth article on a niche site, a listing in a tool directory, and a single exact-match link.
These are suggestions, not promises: each site still has to say yes. I haven’t checked the rankings it gave for two of these sites.
The anchor mix: brand, partial, generic, exact
The anchor is the clickable text of a link. The plan splits the 12 links into 5 brand or URL, 4 partial, 2 generic and 1 exact match, in month 3.

That’s a healthy mix: mostly neutral text, one exact keyword. It is the opposite of what Google lists as link spam: “links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites.”
Pace and exclusion rules
The pace: about 4 links a month. The criteria for picking a site, translated: topic first, a real audience, reachable on your own.

The exclusion list helps too: the site that already links to you, competing tool publishers, sites crowded with commercial links, and off-topic sites. Knowing who not to contact saves you time.

Step 4: correct what it misread
Internal links described wrongly
Among its three actions for the week, SemChat said my page was already linked from my strongest pages: the review, pricing and free course pages.

False for two pages out of three. I read the HTML of all 51 URLs in the site’s French sitemap: the review page links to it, the pricing and course pages don’t. Internal links are the links between your own pages; check them before you chase links elsewhere.
A ranking it missed: the page already ranks
SemChat wrote “0 position top 50” (no ranking in the top 50). False too: Search Console showed an average position of 37 for “messages automatiques instagram,” from October 1 to 28, 2026, on 2 impressions. Small, but inside the top 50.
Same caution with its search volumes: 191 a month for one query, where DataForSEO gave 110; 300 for another, where DataForSEO gave 320. Check any SemChat volume before you rely on it.
Step 5: track your campaign over time
The calendar and the tracking document
The document sets three checkpoints, at the end of each month. Month 1: every link live and indexed. Month 2: the same, plus rankings on the two target queries. Month 3: a review against the starting point.

It ends on an honest line: “Aucun chiffre de position ou de trafic n’est promis” (No ranking or traffic figure is promised). Just above, though, it names a “cible réaliste” (realistic target) ranking for month 3. Read it as a marker, not a promise.
The cost: a data gap for this request alone. My Starter plan usage went from 49.4% to 55.7% across two lessons, this one included; I don’t split the difference.
Link building services that sell links: why we don’t recommend them
Some services sell links by the dozen. Google’s first example of link spam is “Buying or selling links for ranking purposes” (spam policies, read October 30, 2026). This site recommends no link seller.

Paid placements for advertising are fine “as long as they are qualified with a rel=“nofollow” or rel=“sponsored” attribute value.” A link bought to climb in Google is not.
So pick link building outreach tools for what they do well: finding sites, finding contacts, tracking pitches. Let a plan like SemChat’s set the pages, the link text and the pace, then check its sources yourself. For the rest of my test, read our SemChat review, and for the plans, our SemChat pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Can Semrush's link building tool run your outreach for you?
Semrush describes its backlink tools as able to “audit backlink profiles, identify toxic links, discover outreach prospects” (its llms.txt, read for our fiche on October 29, 2026). We haven't tested them, and our fiche doesn't say how far they go in sending pitches. Whatever the tool, you still decide who to contact and what to offer them.
What does a good link building example look like?
In SemChat's plan for our test page: a helpful answer to a real question on a forum, with the link as support, because “ta réponse doit rester utile même sans le lien” (your answer must stay useful even without the link). Or offering a site that already covers your topic to add your hands-on test to its article. Nobody pays, and the link makes sense for readers.
Are there free link building sites worth using?
Be careful with sites that exist to give out links. Google lists “Low-quality directory or bookmark site links” among its examples of link spam (spam policies, read October 30, 2026). A niche directory with real visitors can be fine; SemChat's plan included a single tool directory, in its third month.
How many links should a campaign aim for each month?
Google gives no number in the pages we read on October 30, 2026. SemChat's plan for our test page proposed about 4 free links a month, 12 over 3 months. Treat that as a work pace, not a rule: one good link beats ten doubtful ones.
