Ahrefs alternatives: which tool to pick when your budget is tight

The right Ahrefs alternative depends on what stopped you. No free trial and no competitor research on the free account? Semrush Free or SemChat's Free plan. An assistant without paying €119 a month? SemChat, the only tool we tested on a real account (October 29, 2026). An agency: SE Ranking. Writing first: Surfer. And for backlinks, Ahrefs keeps its own link index.

This page is part of the guide: best free SEO tools

You’re looking for an Ahrefs alternative. Maybe you searched for a free trial and found there isn’t one. Maybe €119 a month for the assistant felt steep. The question isn’t “which tool is best”. It’s which tool fits you.

How we sorted them: every fact comes from each tool’s official pages, read on October 29 and 30, 2026. I tested only one tool on a real account, SemChat, and its buttons on this page are affiliate links: I earn a commission if you subscribe, at no extra cost to you. The others are described from their own pages, strengths included. If you’d rather see what you can do without paying first, our guide to the best free seo tools sorts them by need.

We asked four questions a small business owner cares about. What do you get for free? What does the first paid plan cost? Can you simply ask questions? And who is the tool built for? Ranking tools from “best” to “worst” would make no sense: an agency and a florist don’t need the same thing.

Best Ahrefs alternative by profile: the quick verdict

  • You’re not an SEO and want to ask in plain words: SemChat. Free plan, then €20 a month, the assistant built in.
  • You want to look at competitors for free: Semrush Free, 10 reports a day, or SemChat Free.
  • You’re an agency or an in-house team: SE Ranking, which says it’s built for you.
  • Your budget is zero: Ubersuggest’s free plan, Semrush Free, SemChat Free, plus Search Console.
  • You mostly write content: Surfer, a writing tool.
  • Backlinks are your job: stay with Ahrefs and its own link index.

Why people switch from Ahrefs

Ahrefs is a strong tool: “Marketers at 44% of the Fortune 500” use it, Ahrefs says. But four things push small businesses to look elsewhere.

The free Ahrefs account only covers your own verified sites

Ahrefs Free costs nothing, asks for no card and has no end date. The limit is clear in Ahrefs’ FAQ: “you can’t research competitors’ sites without paying”. For most small businesses, competitors are the first thing they want to see.

No free trial, and credits on the Starter and Lite plans

“We don’t provide any free trials, but you can check out our free account”, says Ahrefs’ help center. There are no discounts or promo codes either.

The entry plan, Starter, costs €27 a month, monthly only. Lite costs €119, or €99.17 billed yearly, before tax, as read from France. Both run on credits: 200 a month on Starter, 1,000 per user on Lite. Ahrefs’ FAQ warns this “can feel restrictive if you run frequent keyword or competitor lookups”. Prices in US dollars on the American pricing page: missing data (planned source: Ahrefs pricing page read from the US).

Official Ahrefs pricing page with the Starter, Lite and higher plans

Prices that change with the page

One more source of doubt: the currency. Read from France, the pricing page shows euros (Starter €27), the Ahrefs Free page shows “£23/mo” for Starter, and the blog and help center quote dollars ($29). Ahrefs’ terms say it applies “a fixed conversion rate that is updated from time to time”. Check the price on the page you’ll actually pay from.

Ask Ahrefs and MCP: from the Lite plan up

Ahrefs has a real assistant, Ask Ahrefs, which answers “plain-English questions”. It’s “Free during beta on Lite+ plans”, and “Not available on Free or Starter plans.” The MCP server, to plug Ahrefs into another assistant, also starts with Lite. So the cheapest way to talk to Ahrefs is €119 a month.

To be fair: what you leave behind is real. Ahrefs runs its own link index, “100% Ahrefs-owned”, updated every 15 to 30 minutes, with data in 217+ countries and locations. Its FAQ also says data is “best treated as estimates” and that depth “varies significantly by market”. If backlinks are your daily work, no tool on this list claims to match that index.

Ahrefs also tracks your brand in AI answers with Brand Radar (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews and more), and Rank Tracker covers 190+ locations. The price of that depth is time: Ahrefs’ FAQ says core features “click within a few weeks, but advanced workflows take a few months of consistent use”.

Free Ahrefs alternative: what you can use without paying

A free Ahrefs alternative won’t give you Ahrefs’ data. It can give you enough to act.

Google Search Console: your own site’s data, free

Start here, whatever tool you pick. Search Console is Google’s free tool for your own site: your clicks and positions in Google, from Google itself. Most SEO tools, SemChat and Ahrefs included, can connect to it.

Public page of Google Search Console, the free Google tool that reports on your own site

Ubersuggest free: a few searches a day

Ubersuggest’s free plan has no time limit but stays small: 3 searches a day, 1 project, 25 tracked keywords and a 150-page audit a week (help article updated July 26, 2025). Its MCP server and ChatGPT app work with a free account. Our Ubersuggest alternatives guide goes further.

Ahrefs Free itself: keep it for your own site

Switching doesn’t mean leaving Ahrefs Free. It stays free, with no end date, for the sites you verify: Site Explorer, Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project, and Web Analytics. Many small businesses can pair it with another free plan for competitors.

Semrush Free: daily reports with no card

Semrush Free is the closest thing to what people hoped an Ahrefs free trial would be: “No credit card required”, “1 demo project”, “10 reports per day across all vital tools” (pricing page, October 30, 2026). You can look at competitors, within that daily limit. Our Semrush alternative guide compares it with the rest.

Ahrefs competitors: the paid suites

If you want a full suite like Ahrefs, three names come up. Each has its own focus.

Semrush: the direct rival, with a free plan

Semrush aims at everyone, “from solo entrepreneurs to large agencies and enterprises”. Its SEO plan costs €134 a month as read from France, with daily tracking of 500 keywords, and a 7-day trial that asks for a card. A chat built into Semrush isn’t mentioned on the pages we read; you chat with its data through ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity, via its MCP.

Pick Semrush if you want to look at competitors every day and like full dashboards. Skip it if €134 a month is more than your SEO budget.

SE Ranking: a suite for agencies and in-house teams

SE Ranking says it plainly: “It’s built for agencies and in-house marketing teams”. A page for small businesses adds “no technical experience needed”. Core costs €109 a month. There’s no free plan, but the trial is generous: “a free 14-day trial (no card required)”. Pick it if you manage several sites or clients. Skip it if you want a free plan that lasts. More in our SE Ranking alternative guide.

Surfer is built for content. It describes itself as “Not a chatbot or a general-purpose AI assistant”, and has no backlink index. Discovery costs €59 a month, or €49 billed yearly, with a 7-day trial of the Pro plan that asks for a card. If you write a lot, it’s worth a look; if links are your question, it isn’t the tool. See our Surfer SEO alternative page.

Ubersuggest’s paid plans start at €29 a month (Individual), or €16 billed yearly, with a 7-day trial that asks for a card. It has an AI Chat in the app.

ChatSEO, a chat assistant whose backlink data comes from DataForSEO, starts at €29 with a 7-day trial and a card. Our ChatSEO alternative page covers it.

SemChat: an Ahrefs alternative with an assistant from the Free plan

SemChat is a different kind of tool. You don’t open reports: you type a question about your site, in plain words, and it answers with a plan. Its pricing page says: “Every feature, in every plan. Just pick your monthly usage.”

SemChat app home screen with the box where you type your SEO question

The SemChat app home screen, where you type your question, even on the Free plan (French interface). Screenshot of the SemChat app (Jérémy’s account), October 29, 2026.

On October 29, 2026, on the Free plan, I asked for an audit in one sentence. In about 3 minutes, SemChat checked 89 positions, 30 top pages, the backlink profile and 10 competitors, then gave me 3 actions for the week. It also found a real error: a contact page returning a 404.

The output: 8 key figures, a 5-point diagnosis, the 3 actions, and a 10-section document I could keep. It connects to Search Console, which I tested, and to GA4, Bing Webmaster Tools, WordPress, Webflow, Slack, Notion and Yandex Metrica.

Where Ahrefs stays ahead of SemChat

SemChat looks at your backlink profile in its audit, but it doesn’t claim an index like Ahrefs’. In France, it uses Haloscan data; SemChat and Haloscan have the same publisher, ARCHI301. Elsewhere, its data sources aren’t named. Rank tracking isn’t mentioned on its pages, and AI-engine visibility is planned with no date. Ahrefs has both today.

Who SemChat is not for: if you need daily rank tracking, a link index to prospect for backlinks, or an API with public documentation today, look at Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking first.

From €0 to €20 a month: the SemChat plans in brief

Free costs €0 (“Try semchat with no credit card”). Starter is €20 a month, or €16 billed yearly; Pro 5x €100 and Pro 20x €200. Prices read as before tax: my first Starter invoice was €24.00 with VAT. The catch: one full audit used my whole Free quota for the month. Details on our SemChat pricing page and in our SemChat review.

How to choose your Ahrefs alternative in three steps

  1. Write down the one question you want answered. “Who links to my competitor?” points to a link tool. “What should I fix on my site this week?” points to an audit or an assistant.
  2. Try the free option first. Semrush Free, Ubersuggest’s free plan and SemChat Free ask for no card. SE Ranking’s 14-day trial doesn’t either. Ahrefs Free covers your own site.
  3. Pay for the one you open every week. If a free plan runs out before the month does, that’s your sign. Compare entry prices, not top plans: €20 for SemChat Starter, €27 for Ahrefs Starter, €29 for Ubersuggest or ChatSEO.

Before you leave Ahrefs, connect Search Console to your new tool. Your clicks and positions live there, not in Ahrefs, so that part of your history goes with you.

Ahrefs measures more: its own link index, 217+ locations, rank tracking, AI visibility with Brand Radar. SemChat lets you ask and act from €0, with the assistant built in.

Our Ahrefs vs SemChat comparison puts them side by side: data, backlinks, audits, assistant, MCP and prices.

Ahrefs pricing: plans, credits and add-ons, the real cost of a subscription

The plan is only the start. Extra users, API units, Content Kit, Report Builder and Brand Radar can come on top. Yearly billing means 10 months paid for 12, and refunds are rare.

Our Ahrefs pricing page adds it all up, from Starter at €27 to Enterprise at €1,394 a month.

Ahrefs free trial: no trial, but a free account and free tools

Ahrefs offers no trial, but Ahrefs Free and a set of free checkers go further than most people think: your own site’s links and audit, the first 20 backlinks of any domain, the first 100 keyword ideas.

Our Ahrefs free trial page shows what each one gives and where it stops.

Whichever Ahrefs alternative you pick, start with its free option, and keep the one you open every week.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Ahrefs alternative that lasts?

Yes, several free plans have no end date: Semrush Free (no card, 10 reports a day), Ubersuggest's free plan (3 searches a day) and SemChat Free (every feature, a monthly usage quota). Ahrefs Free also lasts, but only for the sites you own. Google Search Console stays the free base for your own site.

What is the cheapest full Ahrefs alternative?

Among the tools we compared, SemChat Starter costs €20 a month before tax with every feature. Next come Ubersuggest Individual and ChatSEO Starter at €29. Ahrefs Starter is €27 without its assistant (prices read from France, monthly billing, October 29, 2026).

Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for a small business?

It depends on the job. Ahrefs is known for its own link index; Semrush Free lets you look at competitors for free, 10 reports a day. Ahrefs Free only covers your own sites. Paid, Ahrefs starts lower (€27 against €134 for Semrush's SEO plan, read from France).

How hard is it to move from Ahrefs to another tool?

Your site's data isn't locked in: Search Console holds your clicks and positions, and most tools, SemChat included, connect to it. What you leave behind is Ahrefs' history and reports. Ahrefs' FAQ says core features click within a few weeks, so plan time to learn any new suite.
